Service details and pricing
The overview below explains how this service works, common problems we see, and what Sacramento homeowners should expect before scheduling.
Sacramento has some of the most variable humidity conditions in California. Summers bring wilting dry heat — outdoor relative humidity regularly drops below 15%, pulling moisture from everything inside your home. Yet winter rains and morning fog can push indoor humidity toward mold-friendly levels. A whole-home humidity control system works automatically through your existing HVAC to keep conditions in the healthy 35–50% range year-round.
Why Sacramento Homes Need Humidity Control
The Problem with Dry Air
When outdoor RH drops to 10–20% in summer and you're running the AC, indoor air gets extremely dry. Consequences include:
- Respiratory irritation — dry nasal passages, sore throats, increased allergen sensitivity
- Sleep disruption — worsens snoring and dry mouth; increased susceptibility to colds
- Static electricity — nuisance shocks from carpets and fabrics
- Wood damage — hardwood floors gap; cabinet joints loosen; piano keys stick; furniture shrinks
The Problem with Excess Humidity
Above 60% RH, mold and dust mites thrive. In Sacramento, this occurs during periods of:
- Winter rain and condensation
- Morning fog infiltration
- Crawlspace or basement moisture intrusion
- Poor ventilation during cooler months
What We Install
Bypass Humidifiers
Mount to the supply or return plenum; use furnace blower to pass air over a water panel. Water evaporates into the airstream and distributes throughout the house. Best for homes with a gas furnace that runs regularly in winter.
- AprilAire 500/600 — industry standard, 12–18 gallons/day output
- Low maintenance, simple design, long service life
Fan-Powered Humidifiers
Have their own blower, so they can add moisture even when the furnace isn't running. More effective in milder winters or homes with heat pumps.
- AprilAire 700 — 18 gallons/day, works with any heating system
- Better for homes where the furnace runs infrequently
Steam Humidifiers
Use electric heating elements to produce steam, which is injected directly into the airstream. Highest output (up to 34 gallons/day) and most precise control — can maintain exact RH levels regardless of outside temperature.
- AprilAire 800 — best for large homes or when precision is critical
- Works independently of heating system
Whole-Home Dehumidifiers
Installed in the duct system to remove excess moisture during humid periods. Particularly valuable for:
- Homes with crawlspaces or basements
- Tightly sealed homes with limited natural ventilation
- Allergy sufferers who need consistent low-humidity conditions
Santa Fe and Aprilaire units are our preferred brands — ENERGY STAR rated, sized for whole-home treatment.
Combination Units
For true year-round control, we install a humidistat-controlled system with both humidification and dehumidification capability. The system automatically determines which mode is needed based on current indoor RH.
Installation & Integration
Whole-home humidifiers connect to your water supply line, install in the furnace plenum, and wire to the thermostat or a dedicated humidistat. Installation typically takes 2–3 hours. Modern smart thermostats (Ecobee, Nest) can control whole-home humidifiers directly — we configure this integration as part of the installation.
The humidistat maintains your set point automatically — you set it once and forget it.
